The luxury hotel industry has long operated on a simple assumption: that luxury is visible. That it lives in marble lobbies, white linen, formal service, and the weight of a famous name. For decades, the category has competed not on understanding its guests but on out-signalling its competitors — a race to perform prestige rather than deliver it.
Curtain + Co was conceived as a direct response to that assumption. A boutique international hotel group with its flagship in a former Vaudeville theatre on West 44th Street, Manhattan, and subsequent locations in New Orleans, Kyoto, London, Shanghai and Amsterdam. Founded by Margaux Ward — daughter of a New Orleans jazz pianist and a London-born theatre set designer — it was never going to be a conventional hotel. Margaux grew up backstage and on the road, which gave her something most hoteliers don't have: a first-hand understanding of what luxury while travelling actually feels like, and a deep suspicion of the industry that was supposed to provide it.
StudioFMRG was brought in to build the Curtain + Co brand from the ground up — to find the strategic foundation, build the identity system, and bring the world to life across every touchpoint a guest would encounter from the street to the room.
The result is a brand that competes at the highest tier of luxury hospitality while refusing its conventions entirely. A brand whose restraint is its confidence, whose wit rewards attention, and whose every material, copy decision and design choice points back to a single, genuine belief: that the most luxurious thing is feeling understood.
Curtain + Co is a self-initiated project, developed by StudioFMRG as a speculative brief to explore what brand strategy and identity looks like when the category's assumptions are treated not as a brief but as a problem to solve.
